Five-time Grammy Award winner, Robert Cray has led his own band as well as established a solo career. At the age of 20 Cray decided to form his own band and began playing shows in college towns on the west coast. In 1982, Cray was signed to Mercury Records after several years of regional success and has opened for several artists including Eric Clapton. Cray is known for generally playing Fender guitars and has two signature Robert Cray Stratocasters models available from Fender.

Daughter of Johnny Copeland, Shemekia Copeland, began to pursue her singing career at age 16. Her father took her on tour as his opening act, helping her establish her name in the blues scene. Copeland released her debut album, Turn the Heat Up!, in 1998, and her second album, Wicked, in 2000 which earned her three Blues Music Awards. On June 12, 2011 at the Chicago Blues Festival Copeland was presented Koko Taylor’s crown and was officially given the honor as the new “Queen of the Blues.”

Jannus Live is proud to present American singer-songwriter Southside Johnny, Friday, February 17th. Southside was the second act to emerge from the Jersey Shore music scene, after Bruce Springsteen, and is considered the “grandfather of the New Jersey sound.” He has released more than 10 albums and has worked with artists like Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi. Jon Bon Jovi has even claimed Southside as his “reason for singing.” According to a post on Southside’s official website in May 2011, he is recording a new album with the Jukes as well as working on an acoustic album.

Yonder Mountain String Band has always played music by its own set of rules.  Bending bluegrass, rock and countless other influences that the band cites, Yonder has pioneered a sound of their own.  With their traditional lineup of  instruments, the band may look like a traditional bluegrass band at first glance but they’ve created their own music that transcends any genre.

Banjo player Dave Johnston points out, “What could be more pure than making your own music.”  Yonder’s sound cannot be classified purely as “bluegrass” or “string music” but rather it’s an original sound created from “looking at music from [their] own experiences and doing the best job possible.”  The band continues to play by their own rules on their new record The Show.

The Colorado-based foursome has crisscrossed the country over the past eleven years playing such varied settings as festivals, rock clubs, Red Rocks Amphitheater in the band’s home state, and recently the Democratic National Convention in Denver at Mile High Stadium opening for Barack Obama.  Their loyal fanbase has been built from this diverse setting of music venues as fans latched on to their genre-defying original sound.

“We don’t have a lot of nostalgia for the past,” says banjo player Dave Johnston. “You shouldn’t try to recreate the 1940s. I like to think of us as informed by the past and all the great performers before us. But we also want to look forward rather than give people something that has already been perfected.”

Red is known for their energetic live shows and their Christian rock music that incorporates other sounds such as alternative rock, hard rock, heavy metal and post-grunge. “We always like to call ourselves a Christian band because that’s what we are,” says guitarist Anthony Armstrong. “If they ask us if we’re a Christian band, we tell them yes. And if they ask us why, we tell them why.”

Red’s debut album End of Silence was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Gospel Album. The first single on the album “Breathe Into Me” peaked at No. 15 on the U.S. Mainstream Rock chart. The band has sold more than 700,000 copies of their albums End of Silence and Innocence & Instinct.

The Canadian Christian rock band, Thousand Foot Krutch, formed back in 1995. They have released five major albums: Set It Off (2001), Phenomenon (2003), The Art of Breaking (2005), The Flame In All of Us(2007), and Welcome to the Masquerade (2009), and they are currently working on The End Is Where We Beginwhich is scheduled to release in March 2012. The band has sold more than half a million albums.

Celebrating its 12th anniversary and nearly 1800 shows performed, Dark Star Orchestra presents its critically acclaimed live show to Deadheads both old and new at every show on its non-stop tour.

Using entire shows from the Grateful Dead’s decades of touring as a launching pad, Dark Star Orchestra recreates song for song performances straight from historic set lists. Not merely mimicking the Dead, DSO instead seeks the individual style of each era and offers its own interpretations and improvisations for a group famed and loved for their interpretations and improvisations.

Having just celebrated their 13th anniversary of touring worldwide to the tune of over 1900 shows, Dark Star Orchestra’s determined commitment to ‘raising the Dead’ has drawn them much critical acclaim.

Critics aren’t the only ones singing Dark Star Orchestra’s praises. Five original members of the Grateful Dead have played alongside DSO and have had this to say:

Made up of Jeff Mattson (Jerry Garcia), Lisa Mackey (Donna Jean Godchaux), Dino English (Bill Kreutzmann), Rob Koritz (Mickey Hart), Kevin Rosen (Phil Lesh), Rob Eaton (Bob Weir) and Rob Barraco (handling multiple keyboardists), Dark Star Orchestra does not try to match Grateful Dead live songs note for note. Anything more formulaic would quickly dispel the free spirit embodied in the music.

Precision is king with DSO, which position the stage plot based on the year of Grateful Dead show to be performed, adapting phrasing, voice arrangements, and even arranges specific musical equipment for the various eras of Dead music performed. At the end of every performance, the band announces the date and venue where the original show just covered took place. Dark Star Orchestra dips into every incarnation of the Dead, so most fans can “see” shows that happened long before they were born.

Dark Star Orchestra isn’t a cover band. Its shows are not even meant as tributes. What Dark Star Orchestra achieves is a continuation of the spirit of what has now become over forty years of the Grateful Dead’s timeless music.

Badfish… the most well-known tribute to Sublime. Named after the Sublime song from the 40 oz. to Freedom, Badfish formed in 2001 at the University of Rhode Island. They began playing locally at clubs and quickly sold out shows and began touring other parts of the U.S.  The band was nominated for Best Tribute Act in the Boston Music Awards in 2008.
