In 2008, Vampire Weekend — whose four members met while attending Columbia University — caused a major stir with their self-titled debut album. Its breezy, melodic pop tinged with African and other ethnic styles, which the band described as “upper west side Soweto,” managed to be both reassuringly familiar and startlingly original.
The follow-up album, Contra, was released in January of this year and entered the Billboard 200 sales chart at No 1. Even more ambitious than it’s predecessor, Contra calls on myriad influences, all of which are incorporated with subtlety and sophistication, woven together into a seamless fabric of references that, heard in full, resembles nothing so much as itself.
Supporting Vampire Weekend at Jannus Live will be the Baltimore dream-pop band Beach House as well as The Very Best, a daring London-based unit with a fresh take on African pop.
In all, this is a magnificent triple-threat concert headlined by one of the most buzzed bands on the planet.
